Pilates is a full body system aimed at creating support and resilience in the body. The main concept of Pilates is integrating the deep core muscles into full body movements. Pilates emphasizes building a strong foundation so the rest of the body can move pain free with ease, strength and fluidity.
Through consistent Pilates practice clients will often find they experience:

Increased Strength and Flexibility:
Pilates can help develop muscular strength and endurance while encouraging full mobility at the joints so your muscles can function optimally.

Improved Posture: The deep core muscles are essential for stabilizing the pelvis and the spine and providing internal support for the body. The problem is, many people don't know how to activate these tiny muscles. Pilates can help by connecting you to these deep stabilizing muscles automatically, so the rest of your body can function optimally.

Increased Body Awareness: Pilates can help you tune into smaller and deeper muscles and as a result increase your awareness in how you're standing or walking throughout the day. Often clients tell me they feel muscles working they didn't even know they had! This involves the integration of mind and body. Joseph Pilates said "it is the mind itself which builds the body" and thus Pilates is a deeply "felt" as well as "thought" movement form.

Movement re-education: The brain controls all movements which are transmitted through neurological pathways. Sometimes however, the pathways  get muddled and aren't the most efficient due to postural changes, injuries, or lifestyle habits. Using imagery and breath, Pilates can tap into the parasympathetic nervous system and begin to re-educate the muscles to work in a more efficient and functional ways.

Pilates can be beneficial to all different people for a variety of reasons! Some people who may benefits from Pilates specifically include:

Back Pain: Pilates has been well associated with both the prevention and treatment of back pain. Many physiotherapists use Pilates as their treatment method for lower back, mid back, and neck pain. Pilates uses a combination of developing deep core support, spinal alignment and mobilization of the hips to teach efficient movement patterns. These combined will help support a strong and stable body.

Pre/Post Natal: Pregnancy is a time when the body goes through dramatic changes and is often accompanied by aches and pains. Pilates can be extremely effective during pregnancy to help keep the body strong and stable and help prepare the body for childbirth. Post birth, it is essential to re-train the deep core muscles before jumping back into the activities you love. Pilates is one of the top treatment methods used by physiotherapists to both prevent and treat conditions like diastasis recti, incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse and pelvic girdle pain.

Athletes and Dancers: Pilates is valuable to athletes who have muscular imbalances due to the nature of their sport. A common imbalance seen in many runners is tight hip flexors combined with weak under recruited glutes. This can put extra stress on the joints and ligaments, specifically the knee and hip. Pilates is a great way to compliment your training sessions to ensure maximal training improvements while staying injury free.

Older Populations: Pilates is a great way to build strength and provide resistance based exercise. Gentle impact and weight bearing exercises can be incorporated in a safe way to increase bone density and reduce the occurrence of fractures. Strong core muscles are also important for posture and balance which can reduce the risk of falling.

Rehab: Pilates is a great way to reintegrate movement into your body when returning from an injury. Developing a strong core and back is essential to everyday function and provides the foundation to all movement. Pilates can provide a low impact way to begin the strengthening process by creating new neurological pathways post injury and developing body awareness. It can also address muscular imbalances, dysfunctional movement patterns and help with movement re-education to prevent future injuries.
