'Combining the science of training with the art of movement'

Dance Scientists at work at Trinity Laban

What is Dance Science?

This is probably the most common question I get...

In 2003, a English national survey investigating dancers' health reported that 80% of dancers are injured each year. Many research reports since then have documented even higher numbers. Something is obviously not right! As a dance scientist, my job is to investigate how to improve dancers' physical and psychological health and wellbeing while improving their performance.

Dance Science is a fast growing field of research. Although originally emerging out of sports science, recent years have seen it forge it's own path and become an important and vital area of dance research. Dance science aims to optimize dancers' performance, reduce their risk of injury and increase their health and wellbeing. By taking a multidisciplinary approach and looking at the 'whole dancer', dance scientists strive to integrate areas of biomechanics, kinesiology, psychology, nutrition and somatic practices to gain a holistic understanding of how to help dancers succeed.

How can a Dance Scientist help YOU:

As a dance science consultant, I offer workshops and courses, as well as hands on practical training sessions to both dancers and teachers.

The aim of my work as a dance science consultant, is to take the physiological and psychological research that is being conducted in the dance science field and deliver this information to those working in the field. By working alongside teachers and dancers, I aim to help navigate how informed research can lead to the practical application of a safer and more effective dance environment.

Dance science is not just for the professional dancer! I believe strongly that encouraging the young dancer to begin to think holistically about their body, their health and their training technique will be invaluable in reducing their risk for injury, improving their performance potential and keeping them dancing happier and healthier for longer.
Workshops are offered to dance students and teachers of all ages and abilities.

Dance for Health

Dance for Health research investigates how dance can be used with populations other than professional dancers, to improve health and well-being. Examples include people with Parkinson's Disease, children and elderly people. Please contact me if you are interested in learning more about the fabulous work being done in this field!
